Will a UK heatwave cause internet blackouts?

Internet in a heatwave 1

As the UK finally enters Summer, Brits will stop complaining about the cold weather to the annual grumbling about how we navigate the heat.

The temperatures can affect several services, from roadworks to construction, but have you ever considered how your internet connection copes with the warmer weather?

The potential for a heatwave to cause broadband issues and/or blackouts in the UK depends on several factors related to infrastructure resilience, power supply, and network management.

Historically, the UK has never experienced widespread internet blackouts solely due to heatwaves. Localised outages have occurred, but they are typically resolved quickly due to robust infrastructure and contingency planning.

Why did the router start sweating during the heatwave? Because it couldn't handle all the streaming and just wanted to chill!

The resilience of modern infrastructure including routers and access points, coupled with proactive measures by internet service providers generally mitigates the risks associated with extreme heat. However, as climate change continues to increase the frequency and intensity of heatwaves, ongoing investment in infrastructure resilience will be crucial to ensure continuous and reliable internet service.
