Home Internet Network Setup Advice for 2025
A home internet network setup refers to the arrangement and configuration of devices and connections that provide internet access and enable communication between devices within your home. Or in simple terms, its where all the cables and kit are placed or connected in your home.
The way your network is configured could impact your internet speed and reliability. Setting up a home network provides a number of advantages, including seamless connectivity for multiple devices, enhanced internet access, and improved network security.

- Choose the Right Internet Plan
Consider the number of users and connected devices within your home as this will affect what speed you require. For streaming, gaming, and remote work, aim for speeds of at least 100 Mbps. Fibre-optic plans, such as FTTP/FTTH (Fibre to the Premises/ Fibre to the Home), are the gold standard for reliability and speed.
Where possible, opt for unlimited data to avoid throttling or additional charges. 
- Select a High-Performance Router or Mesh System
It may be time to invest in a Wi-Fi 6 or 6E router for faster speeds, reduced latency, and the ability to handle multiple devices simultaneously.
For larger homes or areas with poor coverage, consider a mesh Wi-Fi system that eliminates dead zones. VFast offer our own mesh system units called ’Orbits’. - Placement of Equipment
Position your router centrally within your home and away from obstructions like walls, furniture, or appliances to maximise signal strength. The less in the way of your router the better!
Try to avoid putting your router in the kitchen as metallic objects, from your microwave to your freezer or fridge, can affect your signal.
Place your router higher. If your router is near the floor you will benefit from elevated it, as Wi-Fi signals travel downwards, so the higher the router = the better the coverage.
- Secure Your Network
- Strong Passwords: Use a unique and complex password for your Wi-Fi.
- Network Segmentation: Set up a separate network for IoT devices to prevent vulnerabilities.

- Leverage Smart Home Integration
Ensure your network can support smart home devices like smart thermostats, security cameras, and voice assistants.
Look for routers that offer compatibility with popular smart home ecosystems, such as Alexa, Google Home, or Apple HomeKit.

- Monitor and Optimise Performance
Use mobile apps provided by router manufacturers to monitor network activity, prioritise bandwidth, and troubleshoot issues.
You should try to allocate higher bandwidth to critical devices like work laptops or gaming consoles. Your router instructions should provide details regarding how to change and allocate bandwidth.
- Consider Backup Solutions
As a nation who heavily rely on our internet connection more than ever, having a backup internet connection is a sensible idea. If your primary connection goes down, having a secondary could be essential to keep you up-and-running, especially if you are a home worker.
- 4G/5G Backup: Invest in a 4G or 5G backup router or dongle for uninterrupted connectivity during outages.
- UPS: Use an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) to keep your router running during power cuts.
- Prepare for the Future
- Scalable Internet Plans: Choose an ISP that offers easy upgrades to higher speeds as your needs grow.
- Smart Cabling: For new builds or renovations, install Cat 6 Ethernet cabling for ultra-fast wired connections.
